Description
Translation theory is a fundamental and essential part of the translation training program for students majoring in foreign language studies at many universities and colleges. The theory courses always challenge students because of their complexity and conceptualization (Bui, 2015). The aims of this study are [1] to introduce a teaching mode based on the workshop model as a cooperative learning approach for stimulating student engagement in the translation theory course; and [2] to investigate students’ attitudes toward the workshop model used to help engage them in class activities. 81 students participated in an 8-session workshop series with various themes. Students’ performance was observed and evaluated by the instructor after each workshop session. The observation report and survey result indicate that the workshop model is a persuasive solution for the further improvement of the cooperative ability of students. The workshop sessions also basically help resolve the limitations of students in completing given translation tasks in class and create the opportunity for students to apply peer assessment to resolve the theoretical issues. Following the findings, the study concludes with some useful and influential suggestions for training and learning translation theory.
