In an era defined by global challenges, the imperative to foster global sustainability has transcended boundaries, extending its influence into various fields, including English Language Teaching (ELT). Sustainability is no longer confined to environmental concerns alone, now encompassing environmental, social, and economic well-being. This study delves into the dynamic intersection of global sustainability and ELT, with a specific focus on uncovering the transformative potential of integrating sustainable development themes into Extensive Reading (ER) for preparing for the IELTS Exam.
The research employs qualitative methods to unveil the profound impact of sustainable development themes on ESL students' writing proficiency within the context of IELTS classrooms. The study encompasses 15 ESL students, from different proficiency levels. Through in-depth interviews, document analysis, and participant journals, this study seeks to illuminate the multifaceted ways in which sustainable development themes shape ESL learners' writing proficiency within the framework of Extensive Reading. Furthermore, it critically examines the implications of sustainability integration for ESL students as they journey toward becoming global citizens. The research result indicated that the integration of sustainable development themes into extensive reading will positively impact students' not only in IELTS writing proficiency but also for their academic pathway in the long run.
