Description
Language and life cannot be separated; nor can a border line be drawn between them.
The closer they are positioned in a language classroom –first or second—the greater
the effect on the learning process and product. Theatre connects both—it turns a class
real life-like in the first language, near life-like a second language. Augusto Boal’s
Newspaper and Image Theatre, as art forms, while performed in a second language class, can
provide opportunities for interaction in the classroom. This workshop explores the
potentials of applying Boal’s Newspaper theatre and Image theatre for enhancing communication skills in the ESL classroom. Newspapers are full of life—and only life—in its various manifestations. All these aspects of life can be converted into theatre
performance and appreciation.
