Description

An active EFL class needs flexible seating arrangements to facilitate a wide range of teaching styles and learning activities. Flexible seating, which allows for the reconfiguration of the physical environment furnished with movable furniture, helps create flexible spaces to enhance collaborative learning, encourage students’ participation, and make a more engaging classroom atmosphere. According to Talbert & Mor‐Avi (2018), high flexibility and mobility provide one of the most promising opportunities to improve learning outcomes. The study, conducted at a university setting in Hanoi, aims to explore the application of flexible seating arrangements to create active EFL classrooms for university students. Specifically, through a mixed-methods approach, including classroom observations and surveys, the study seeks to investigate the potential benefits of flexible seating arrangements as well as the best practices associated with flexible seating arrangements in university-level EFL classrooms. The study presents some practical recommendations for EFL university teachers to effectively implement and optimize flexible seating arrangements in their respective contexts. The findings hold implications for the strategic design and planning of EFL classrooms to foster a more dynamic and student-centered learning experience.
