Speaker
Description
No one can deny the fact that speaking is considered the most challenging skill to a lot of language learners in general, and language learners in Vietnam in particular. From doing research and observation, the author realizes that one of the factors contributing to a learner's progress in speaking is engagement. Once the learners are engaged, they will be more responsible for their learning and willing to practice. It is for sure that the more they practice, the better their skills will be. That brings the author the idea of using self-led warming up activities to motivate students' participation in speaking lessons. This paper will present the actual state of how this idea has been applied in English Department, Hanoi University, its effectiveness, some problems and suggested solutions. The general findings show that self-led warming up activities offer students great motivation and engagement, which results in better oral performance. This research hopefully will contribute to the source of activities that teachers can use to engage their students in speaking lessons.
