Description
Recent advances in artificial intelligence have given rise to the use of chatbots as a viable tool for language learning. One such tool is ChatGPT, which engages users in natural and human-like interactive experiences. While ChatGPT has the potential to be an effective tutor and source of language input, some academics have expressed concerns about its impact on writing pedagogy and academic integrity. Thus, this tech review aims to explore the potential benefits and challenges of using ChatGPT for second language (L2) writing. This review concludes with some recommendations for L2 writing classroom practices.
Biography
Dr. Jessie S. Barrot, Assistant Vice President for Research and Development at National University, was included in the 2023 list of the World’s Top 2% Most Influential Researchers. He is also one of the 10 highest ranked across disciplines and rank 1 in both education and linguistics categories among Philippine-based researchers. As a distinguished scholar, he has received various local and international grants and recognitions and authored nearly 50 scholarly papers and 20 textbooks. He has also been invited as a consultant for major international and national projects and has delivered lectures in over 150 trainings, seminars, and conferences. In his nearly two decades in the academe, he has already held key administrative and leadership positions. His expertise includes second language writing, language pedagogy, computer assisted learning, curriculum, instructional materials development, and educational research.
